Anything you value: in this case, work.

The aglets on the end of hoodies, shoes, etc., and, in fact, any clothes – period.

All of the above have been rescued before maximum damage could occur.

Not pictured: Wires; cables; any technology, but computer keyboards being a favourite; any cloth material; toys (of course); popsicle sticks; tissues; boxes; door frames; anything unattended, ever; anything you’re using. There is a parrot’s creed, which also applies closely to toddlers:

1. If you like it, it’s mine.

2. If I can reach it, it’s mine.

3. If it’s in my beak or foot, it’s mine.

4. If I can take it from you, it’s mine.

5. If I had it a little while ago, it’s mine.

6. If it’s mine, it must never appear to be yours in any way.

7. If I’m chewing something, all the pieces are mine.

8. If it looks like mine, it’s mine.

9. If I saw it first, it’s mine.

10. If you have something and you put it down, it automatically becomes mine.

There is a bit of a moral to this post. To any new parrot owners… It is not a bird’s fault if it chews something, but rather yours, for not supervising closely enough. Chewing is instinct to them, and they really don’t understand right or wrong. (O. was rather upset about his work, pictured up there with a hole straight through the middle, but with me for not watching Mavi carefully enough!) The truth is that you really have to say goodbye to attachment to material possessions, because just about everything you own is going to get a good chew at some point in its lifetime. Unfortunately, we can’t have eyes everywhere. Sigh.

For things that absolutely mustn’t be chewed to bits – like O.’s hand-written compositions, for example – you simply have to keep it in a locked drawer, out of sight, out mind, out of reach. But be forewarned that – with such intelligent and driven creatures as parrots – it’s quite probable that hiding something will be of very little deterrent. You could try to distract with a new activity or object, but know that some birds are very goal-oriented, and once they’ve seen something of interest, they will do everything in their power to get to it

It's true.
It’s true.

  1. Thankfully Bou has no interest in the keyboard, Binki however is obsessed with pulling off the keys. I even bought her a keyboard of her own but nope, she wants my keyboard and only my keyboard.

    1. Haha, aww! Ptak is the same… I think it’s because the only true interest lies in fending off human fingers… It’s like some kind of strange dance. When I bought him his own, cheap keyboard, he spent about two minutes exploring it, and was promptly back on mine!

  2. Hahahaha!!! Love this post! So true…

Adding to the list: a cork board on the wall, a painting, all kinds of cables and wires (conceal them!!!), a plastic globe (yes, they chewed the screw-on top off), window blinds, any pieces of furniture that stick out, paint on the door, and, of course, our clothes, buttons, pockets etc….

And yes, I am one of the unprivileged ones… Managed to reclaim most of the keys from my keyboard. Five are missing forever. LOL

    1. 😀 I forgot blinds… And lampshades! We have a particular paper lampshade that is like catnip to them… Draws them from across the room and nothing – but nothing – will deter them from attempting to get a quick chew in. -_- I’m impressed by your globe, LOL. Here’s to keeping our keyboards as in tact as humanly possible, though!

  3. Hilarious! I’m so glad I saw this post because I’m getting two lovebirds! So now I’m parrot-proofing my home thanks to reading this post…. but LOL I had to warn my hubby to hide everything.

    1. Aww, that’s really exciting; I adore lovebirds! They are terribly cute. Do you know what colour mutation? Parrot-proofing your home is the best thing you can do – for everyone, haha! Even so, they still manage to wiggle into things. I caught our senegal prising open a drawer once to get at the stuff inside. Good luck with your new feathered ones!

      1. I found Stephie in my sock drawer and in my closet. She squeezed in through a tiniest gap! Luckily didnt eat anything, maybe it was to dark inside for her to do any damage LOL. Now I make sure everything is closed tight.

        1. LOL, they’re too funny, aren’t they? Ptak sometimes climbs straight into his bag of seed – dangerous, I know. I lost him once before figuring out that particular trick. The moral is simply to hide everything you can! I’ve learnt to think like a bird. -_-

        2. GASP! Sorry for all the typos in my comments… This is what happens when one has developed a bird brain AND tries to multitask… LOL

        3. Hehehe. I think bird brain is a compliment! My birds have certainly outsmarted me more times than I really care to admit. 😀 I bet Mavi is great at multitasking, too, haha!

        1. Well.. Because you put them in their cages… Duh! Try putting them out of reach, I guarantee they will devour the entire thing LOL!!!

      1. Okay so I got my lovebirds on the 18th of April. The peachfaced lovebirds….. LOL… they are highly entertaining, but they fly around the house and haven’t chewed on anything yet…. I am so puzzled. I read the books on how to care for lovebirds/parrots, on their behavior, etc…. but they are going against everything I read except for their diet… how did we come up with the phrase “Eats like a bird?” These birds LOVE LOVE LOVE their diet of wet foods and dry foods! Although since the 18th of April, I think I have vacuumed over, at least, 5 times a day!!! But I love these parrots… they are way too adorable 😀

        1. Awwww… Yes! The vacuuming NEVER ends! And yes, they all eat like pigs!!! LOL!

Maybe you got the least naughty lovebirds in the universe… Or… They are just warming up LOL. Either way, enjoy them 🙂

        2. Yay! That’s so exciting. 😀 Oooh, yes, birds are such piggies… I know mine will eat all day, if you let them. Being flighted takes a lot of energy! It also takes a lot of energy to make those big messes – guess they don’t want us to be bored, haha. As to the chewing, fingers crossed yours will stay uninterested in things! Ptak was kind of the same. Once he explored all the new things and they became boring (took awhile!), he found sudden interest in all things forbidden. Fortunately they’re still cute, even when they destroy your house. 😀
